So I am in need of purchasing an annual web domain, mostly for personal FTP. I am not sure what service I should go with, but I am in need of the most reliable. One that isn't gonna go down every week, etc... Any ideas?

EDIT: Cheap and reliable would be nice too! :D

I use Globat.com for the four websites that I run. Been decent so far.

Sure is taking a long time for the Globat homepage to come up... (for me anyway)

I would like to hear folks suggestions on this as I have been considering getting a place for file hosting.

I use http://web.tera-byte.com/ for my dad's site and I use http://www.slashcity.com for my personal site. I don't believe Slashcity is open to the public, though, but I can't remember.

I'm a big fan of www.aplus.net (http://www.aplus.net) . They host both of my sites, never go down, are fast and a great bargain. $10/mo for 2GB and 20GB/mo bandwidth when i bought. Now, they've upped it to, I think 12GB and 60GB/mo bandwidth.

They got CNET's editor's choice award for that plan, too. (UNIX hosting, not windows)

For my personal site I use yahoo small business, their cheapo plan is $12 a month, 5gb space, 200gb/mo bandwidth. Never had a problem with it going down.

I also have an account at the oldest public dialup ISP... theworld.com (formerly world.std.com) - again, never had a significant problem with it going down for the 15 (yes, 15) years I've had an account there. The pricing isn't really attractive, especially for the amount of storage you get. Mainly this is what I use for dialup when I *have* to use dialup, and it's not AOL so I'm happy with it.

I also have a bunch of servers colocated at savvis, but I don't think that's the kind of bandwidth and reliability you're looking for... nor the price :D

I use the $3.95 plan at www.8-95.com (http://www.8-95.com) for hosting and godaddy.com for domain registration. $4 a month for 800MB and 10GB transfer. No complaints on either. I use php and mysql on 8-95.com as well. At that price they don't hold your hand so if you can't figure most stuff out yourself you might want to pass.

I host my own DNS/mail/web/FTP, can't beat that for flexibility! :)

Same here. Alas, I don't have at will physical access to my server any more since my access card was stolen with my wallet and the ISP wants to charge $50 a card-key instead of the $10 that our (SeaCCP) contract states.

well, I purchased the basic plan from www.globat.com (http://www.globat.com)

I'm not to impressed with their control panel, buuuuuuuuuuuuuut... I did get a deal for half off the normal price, so I can't complain too much... Plus they do give you plenty of bang for your buck!

We'll see how it goes!

I am not impressed with globat.com so far!

Already, the server has gone down at least 2 times, for more than 10 minutes, and it is getting EXTREMELY aggrivating! I checked at phpnuke.org, and globat.com got VERY low reviews by people! I would not suggest globat.com

I signed up with 1&1 Internet (http://order.1and1.com/xml/order;jsessionid=C9BADF1E193D3A62FFC9DA81BF3DF35E. TC63b) a long time ago when they were new to the US and had 3 years of hosting free with them. (At the time they had an intro deal to get 3 years of free hosting since they were new) Ran a Utopia clan forum and that's pretty much all I ever did with it, but I have to say I don't remember ever having problems with it.

Might want to give them a look see.

You end up having any better luck with globat?

Well, I chatted with one of their customer reps on the site, and since then, nothing bad. I would probably (now) give this host a 7 out of 10. There are a few times when I try to access the site, or just flipping through the links, and it'll bring up that annoying "The page you are trying access cannot be viewed" pages. But even then, It's just a refresh away from being fixed. Since I talked with the rep, I haven't had any problems with the server taking a break on me. It isn't bad, and what they offer, for the price they ask is definetly eye-appealing!
